Harmeet Dhillon resigns as head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division

Harmeet Dhillon, who led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division for 18 months, resigned on Thursday, Attorney General Todd Blanche said, CBS News reports. Under her the division shifted toward priorities that included gun owners’ rights and legal positions opposing civil rights protections for transgender people. Blanche praised her work; the Human Rights Campaign called her exit welcome.

What happened

Dhillon led the division for 18 months. More than 75% of its staff left last year, CBS reports, as she shifted it toward gun owners’ rights, curbing diversity programs at universities and opposing civil rights protections for transgender people.

What each side says

Blanche said she enforced the law “without fear or favor.” Her letter cites ending “unlawful and discriminatory DEI practices” and suits over girls’ sports. The Human Rights Campaign called her exit welcome but said it “doesn’t automatically undo the damage.”

What’s next

Dhillon wrote that she told the White House in early October she would step down after the midterms. The Human Rights Campaign asked the new Congress to use its oversight power to review the division.
