Hong Kong court sentences Joshua Wong to 10 more years in prison

A Hong Kong court sentenced democracy activist Joshua Wong, 30, to 10 more years in prison on Thursday for colluding with foreign forces under the national security law, France 24 and ABC News report. He had been due for release in January. Human Rights Watch and the U.S. consulate called for his release; China’s foreign ministry said other countries should respect Hong Kong’s legal system.

What happened

Hong Kong’s High Court sentenced Wong, 30, on Thursday under Beijing’s national security law for conspiring to collude with foreign forces. He pleaded guilty in September to seeking foreign sanctions against Hong Kong and China. He has been in prison since 2020.

What each side says

The judge called the offence grave and cut a 13-year starting point for the guilty plea. Human Rights Watch called the charges baseless and urged Wong’s release, as did the U.S. consulate. China’s foreign ministry said other countries should respect Hong Kong’s legal system.

What’s next

The new term runs alongside the two months left on his old one, ABC News reports. Human Rights Watch says Wong now faces prison until late 2036, when he will be 40.

“The punishment must fit the gravity of the crime.” Judge William Tam, Hong Kong High Court, as quoted by ABC News
